    • Swarthmore College - FOUNDER OF EDUCATION PROGRAM PASSES - Alice Brodhead, professor emerita of education, died on May 26 at the age of 89. A member of the Swarthmore faculty from 1952 to 1977, Brodhead started the education program for the training and certification of primary and secondary teachers. During her years at the College, she established relations with a number of area school districts, mentored hundreds of students, and served as head of Media-Providence Friends School. Obliged to retire at 65, she took a full-time job on a research project studying retirement and aging in the United States.

Brodhead Retired professor, 89 - Alice Kinsman Brodhead, 89, of Swarthmore, who played a major role in introducing an education program that helped Swarthmore College students prepare for teaching careers, died May 29 at Stonegates, a retirement community in Wilmington, after a series of strokes. Mrs. Brodhead joined the Swarthmore faculty in the late 1930s as an instructor in English literature. In 1952, she headed a curriculum change in which students were trained to teach at the primary and secondary school levels. She helped students obtain teaching certificates and find teaching positions. But her counseling did not end with the graduation of her students, her family said. Mrs. Brodhead remained in contact with students - some 50 years after their graduation - and offered counseling in professional and personal matters. She retired from Swarthmore in 1977 as a professor in the department of psychology. Mrs. Brodhead was born in Sunbury, Pa., and moved to Philadelphia, graduating in 1929 from Overbrook High School. She studied at the University of Pennsylvania and earned an undergraduate degree in 1933 and a master's degree in 1934, both in English literature. She also taught at Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia, Wilmington Friends School and the School in Rose Valley. Her husband of 50 years, Robert Brodhead, died in 1984. Surviving are daughter Virginia Clemmer; two granddaughters; and two grandsons. A memorial service will be held in September. Burial was in Old St. Davids Cemetery, Radnor.
