- Dale F. Rockel, 79, of Pond Hill concluded his journey in this life at 7:20 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2009, in the emergency room of Berwick Hospital Center after being stricken with a heart attack at his home.
Born in Pond Hill on Sept. 14, 1929, he was a son of the late Hoyt and Selma T. Keiner Rockel.
He started working at 14 with Clewell Dairy, Berwick. Later, he started Rockel's Garage, Pond Hill, with his late brother, Ira. Following Ira's death, he owned and operated it until 1980, now operated by his son. After retiring, he worked for PP&L until 1989. He also owned his own school bus company and drove for it.
He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge; the Junior Mechanics; officer at the Falcon's; served as chief and assistant chief for 19 years for Pond Hill Fire Co, and was one of its founding members; Sporting Club, Mocanaqua; lieutenant for Pond Hill Fire Police; and enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking.
He joins a brother, Ira, who died on April 12, 1962; and sister, Dorothy Kellow, who died on July 19, 2006.
Dale will be remembered by his wife, the former Shirley Rule, with whom he was married 55 years this past October; two children, Dale T. Rockel and wife, Jean, Pond Hill; Emil Carver, at home; two grandchildren, Melissa Kraus and husband, Douglas, North Carolina; Dale T. Rockel Jr. and wife, Tiffany, Wapwallopen; two great-grandchildren, Dale T. Rockel III and Anna Grace Kraus; brother, Bud Rockel and wife, Joanne, Pond Hill; sister, Charlotte Wenner, Briggsville; and his dog Rusty, who was his baby. "Always in our hearts."
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Leslie Halchak, pastor of New Hope United Methodist Church, Slocum, presiding, at Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck. Friends may call Monday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
