- Newspaper Obituary - October 7, 1937 - Clarence J. Widrig - Services for Clarence J. Widrig were held Tuesday afternoon at his late home, Rev. W. S. Dobbie officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery. Sandy Creek High School was closed during the afternoon in tribute to Mr. Widrig who was a member of the board of education. Mr. Widrig underwent a major operation at Mercy Hospital in Watertown about five weeks ago and was at first believed to be making a satisfactory recovery. Complications followed, which resulted in his death Saturday noon October 2, 1937. He was born in Sandy Creek October 24, 1884, son of the late Gilbert C. Widrig and Mrs. Carrie Zufelt Widrig of this village. He attended Sandy Creek high school and for several years was in the grocery business here. From 1907 to 1918 he was a partner in the Bettinger and Widrig market and grocery. For about 12 years he had been central and northern New York sales representative for the Wilbur Feed company of Jamestown. August 25, 1906 Mr. Widrig married Miss Edna Sprague, only daughter of Abner and Allie Bettinger Sprague of Sandy Creek. Her death occurred December 10, 1918. October 12, 1922 he married Miss Ruby Cady of Adams Center, who was then teaching in Watertown. Mr. Widrig was a communicant of the Sandy Creek Congregational church, a past mastor of Sandy Creek lodge No. 364 F&AM, and trustee of the lodge. He was a member of the Board of Education here. He owned to farms in the western part of the town and took an active interest in their management and welfare. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ruby Widrig; on son, James, 9; his mother, Mrs. Carrie Widrig, and a sister, Mrs. Ralph W. Shaul, of Sandy Creek. Another son Robert, died when a baby.
