      BETHLEHEM - Betty J. Rhoades, 84, of Bethlehem, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, in Easton Hospital.

      She was born in Mount Carmel, a daughter of the late Willard and Cyrilla (Everet) Kessler. She was married to Chester E. Rhoades, who preceded her in death in 1984.

      Betty was a member of St. Stephen's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bethlehem, where she was a Bible school teacher. She was a former Sunday school teacher at Wesley United Methodist Church.

      She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Janet L. Propsner, Virginia LaBella and Debra A. and Michael Mabus, all of Bethlehem, and Carol L. and Phillip Kashner of Bedminster; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence W. and Barbara Rhoades of Belmont, Calif., and Gary L. and Kathryn Rhoades of Slatington; three brothers, Blaine Kessler and Edward Kessler, both of Mount Carmel, and William Kessler of Dothan, Ala.; one sister, JoAnne Wahosky of Harrisburg; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

      Betty was preceded in death by one grandson, Christopher Propsner, in 1989.

      Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Evangelical Church, 67 W. Washington Ave., Bethlehem, where the funeral will be conducted at 10.

      Contributions may be made in Betty's memory to St. Stephen's Evangelical Church.

      Arrangements were entrusted to the Long Funeral Home, Bethlehem.
