    • Obituary for Carl Shellum

Carl W. Shellum of Merrifield, passed quietly into Everlasting Life on August 29, 2013, surrounded by his family at the Silver Bay Veterans Home.

Carl was born on August 29, 1924 in Clearbrook, MN to Thor and Anna (Ofsteng) Shellum, the 4th of 5 children. He grew up helping on the family farm and then enlisted in the Navy, serving in the Construction Battalion Sea Bee’s. He was primarily stationed in Hawaii and he was sailing to Japan when it was announced the war was over.

After his military duty, he returned to Clearbrook where he ran the local Co-op. There he met and married his wife, Orphie (Anderson) Shellum in 1954. They raised three children, Twyla, Steven and Kurtis; living in Mounds View, Stanchfield and Brainerd, each move a little further “up north”.

Carl worked many part-time jobs, but was a 30 plus year employee of the US Postal Service, sorting mail in Mpls., sorting mail on the mail trains to Chicago and Aberdeen and retiring as foreman of night mail in Brainerd. After his retirement he drove school bus, drove beet trucks in Dakota, drove test cars in Brainerd and traveled.

He built one of their homes and was always tinkering on something and was still running his chain saw at the age of 87.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and took family trips to Alaska and several trips to Canada to camp and fish. He shot his last deer at the family hunting shack at age 86.

Carl is survived by his wife, Orphie; daughter, Twyla Flaws (Curt Nelson); sons, Steven (Pam) Shellum, Kurtis Shellum; his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Emma Holm; and many extended relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Dominic Shellum; sister, Clara (Edwin) Hansen; brothers, Irvin Shellum and Oscar Shellum.

Carl was a member of First Lutheran Church for 45 years and a lifetime member of the American Legion Brainerd Post 255.

A Memorial Service celebrating Carl’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 11:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd, with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service at church. Officiating at the service will be Pastor John Stiles.

There will be a private family burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Center Township.
