Karl W. Hax Sr., 83, of 48 Park St., died Wednesday at his home.
Mr. Hax was a funeral director and had either been an owner or worked in the funeral business for nearly 60 years.
He and his wife, Madolyn, purchased the Foster Funeral Home from Paul K. Foster on Jan. 1, 1960, and renamed the business Foster- Hax Funeral Home in 1970 after remodeling it. He also purchased the Norman Brown Funeral Home in Altmar in 1968. After selling the business to his son, Karl W. Jr., in January 1983, he continued to assist in the operation of the business until his death.
Earlier in his career, he worked from 1954 to 1960 for Simpson Funeral Home, Watertown. He had also worked at Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown, and had done funeral trade work for several years while in Watertown.
Born June 20, 1918, in the town of Orleans, son of Hugh and Eva Stowell Hax, he graduated from LaFargeville High School in 1938 and attended Simmons School of Embalming, Syracuse. He served four years in the Army Air Corps, beginning March 13, 1942. He graduated from Simmons in 1946 and served an apprenticeship with Hoyt Funeral Home, LaFargeville.
He married Madolyn Hurley Merkley on June 25, 1950, at Bethany Methodist Church, Watertown, with the Rev. Lester W. Wakeman officiating.
He was a member of Park United Methodist Church, Pulaski Lodge 415 of the Free and Accepted Masons, a charter member of Northern Oswego County Ambulance, a member of funeral director associations for the state and Onondaga and Oswego counties, a member of Pulaski Service Club, and a member of Robert Edwards American Legion Post 358.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter and her husband, Cynthia M. and Terry Allen, Pulaski; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Karl W. Jr. and Karen, and Robert G., all of Pulaski; a sister, Mrs. Joseph (Marion) Strough, LaFargeville; a brother, Hugh Hax, Plessis; nine grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
A brother, Howard, died in January 1988.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home with the Rev. Marilyn Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
