      Services were to be held today for Edward J. Tinney, a retired Southwest Philadelphia funeral director, who died Wednesday. He was 84 and lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

      A funeral director for 43 years, Tinney was graduated from Villanova University in 1934 and joined his father, William P. Tinney, as a funeral director. The elder Tinney, operating out of his home in the 4700 block of Chester Avenue, founded the business in 1902 at 20th and Christian streets in South Philadelphia.

      Ed Tinney became sole proprietor of the business in 1962. He moved to Florida after retiring in 1977.

      Edward J. Tinney Jr., D.D.S., said his father was a strong proponent of education and expanding one's knowledge.

      "He was known to tell adages such as 'Knowledge is like a smile - it's something that can be given away and kept at the same time.' With respct to finances: 'Money in the bank is a pot of copper while a home is a pot of gold.' "

      Such advice was a gift from this veteran of the Depression and it seemed to flow effortlessly. He was never known to say, "I don't know." Instead, his predictable response was, "Let's look it up," said his son.

      Tinney was a member of the Columbus Social Club and the Olde Delancey Building and Loan Association.

      In addition to his son, Edward, he is survived by his wife, the former Mary Margaret Regan; four daughters, Suzanne O'Callaghan, Marguerite Roth, Judith O'Meara and Marita Burns; 14 grandchildren and two sisters, Elizabeth Urevick and Mary O'Connor.

      Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon today at St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, 47th Street and Springfield Avenue. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
