    • MRS. ORMANSEN DIES

      Mrs. Edith Ridgeway Ormansen, 70, widow of Thorlief Ormansen of Smartville Road, Lacona, died May 9th at the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, following a long illness.

      She attended schools in Boylston and Sandy Creek, graduating from the Pulaski Training School in 1926 and the Oswego Normal School in 1936. She received her bachelor of arts degree in 1946 and her master's degree in 1957 from Oswego State. Mrd. Ormansen received certification in elementary supervision in 1969. Mrs. Ormansen began teaching in 1926 in a small school in the Wood District, later teaching in many other districts, including Sandy Creek, Redfield, Albion, Orwell and the Goodnough districts, which were centralized under the Sandy Creek School District in 1941.

      She taught many grades until 1965, when she specialized in teaching reading in the Sandy Creek school system, becoming
      the reading supervisor. She retired last Feb. 1, after 52 years of teaching, her last position being under the federally sponsored ESEA program, which is for students with reading handicaps. She was one of the 15 teachers listed in "Inside Education" who was teaching with more than 50 years of service. She taught summer schools at Mexico, Pulaski and Altmar Parish-Williamstown for many years. More recently she taught at Sandy Creek during the summer.

      She was a charter member of the VFW auxiliary; past district deputy and president of Oswego County Rebekah Lodge, of which she was a member for 40 years; past president of Oswego County Teachers' Association; past president of supervisory district No. 1 of the teachers' association; past president of the Sandy Creek Teachers' Association; past secretary-treasurer of the Sandy Creek Alumni association; past president of the WSCS; past member of Sigma Phi Rho and Alpha Delta sororrities; charter member and past president ofthe Council of International Reading Association; chairman of the A. Elmo Cole Memorial Fund and other memorial funds associated with the Sandy Creek central school system.

      Surviving are a son, Walter, a state trooper at Haynes, Alaska; and a daughter, Mrs. Robert Clemens, a member of the faculty of the Sandy Creek Central School district and resident of Pulaski; seven grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; a sister, Mrs. Vivian Stater of Lacona; a brother, the Rev. Luther Ridgeway of Rochester; a half sister, Mrs. Grace Jennings of Syracuse; and a half brother, Walter Meziner of North Bridgewater Cassville.

      A son, Carl, died in 1957.

      Services were held May 12 in Sandy Creek United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Wesleyan Cemetery, Boylston. Arrangements were made by Taylor-Vida Funeral Home.
