    • Early In the 19th century England turned to the Protestant religion while Southern Ireland remained Catholic. About the same time England raised the taxes almost double which added to the troubles between the two countries. Henry Henderson who was an officer in the English army was employed by the English Government to collect those taxes in County Cork. While he was out collecting, a band of men dressed as women and calling themselves the "Molly Mc Guires", waylaid him and left him for dead. However, he survived those painful injuries and came with his brothers to Canada in 1827 and later settled in New York State on Grass River in St. Lawrence County. His wife was unable to stand the climate and died soon after entering this country. Henry Henderson died when about 80 from a hernia which began when he was attacked while tax collecting for England.
