- Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, June 18, 1902 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - James Suthard Farmer died at his home, Maplewood Faun, June 14, at 6 a.m., of heart failure. Mr. Farmer was born in Addison, Vermont, March 3, 1825, and was next to the youngest child in a family of eight children, five sons and three daughters. When he was nine years old the family came to this county and settled first in the town of Mexico. The entire distance from Lake Champlain to Oswego was traversed in a canal boat. In June, 1850, Mr. Farmer was united in marriage to Mary, daughter of Pliny Harlow Jones. Mrs. Farmer died October 15, 1895. Three sons and six daughters were born to them, of whom six are living: Charles F., Kate J., wife of the late Thomas Laing; Lawrence J.; Madge N., wife of W. E. Sprague; Maude N., wife of F. W. Austin, and Jessica F. Harry and Abby Jane died in infancy and Mattie J. in 1896. Mr. Farmer has occupied the farm on which he died for 50 years and was universally respected by his neighbors and fellow citizens for his honesty and fairness, being a man of sound judgment. He held several positions of trust and was overseer of the poor for the town of Richland from 1868 to 1878. In politics, he was a Republican. Mr. Farmer's health has never been good since 1865, and for several years has been failing. It has been sometime since he has been seen on the streets of Pulaski where he was formerly so well known. His last sickness was of about a week's duration, yet the entire family were called home and were present at the death bed. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon at three o'clock, Rev. S. O. Barnes officiating. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. Burial was made in Pulaski cemetery.
