Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, March 25, 1896 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Died - At his home in Pulaski, New York, March 21, 1896, in the 83rd year of his age, Gilbert A. Woods. Gilbert Allen Woods was born in Richland, New York, July 5, 1813. He was the fifth child in a family of eleven children, ten boys and one girl, all of whom are now deceased except George W. Woods, of Oswego, New York, and James Woods, of Erie, Illinois. His father and mother, John and Sarah Wait Woods, were among the first settlers of the town, and for many years among the most prominent citizens of the county. During his long and active life, besides managing large farming interests, he was connected with many of the manufacturing interests of the town, was one of the founders in for many years president of the Pulaski bank, and always did what he could to advance the interests of the village and town. In 1837 he married Martha Williams Cheesbrough, who now survives him. There were born to them nine children, three of whom died in infancy; the other six are now living, Henry G., of Nova Scotia; Caroline Estelle, wife of W. H. Bentley; Sarah Elizabeth; Phoebe Esther, wife of Horace A. Knight, of Pulaski, New York; John C., of Hamilton, Ontario; and Charles C., of London, Ontario, all of whom were present at his funeral. He was a kind and loving husband, an affectionate father and a faithful friend, and in a large circle of friends he had been a wise and prudent advisor. Fifty-six years ago he united with the Congregational church of this village, and has always been one of its most liberal supporters and helpers, especially in the erection of the present handsome edifice. During the last four years he has been confined to the house most of the time, from a partial paralysis, but his mind was clear and his interest in all about him unabated until about a week before he died. It seemed strange to see one who had been so long impatient of restraint in his activities becoming so submissive to it; so patient, so forbearing.
