Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, August 6, 1903 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Found Dead - Deceased was Well Known in Sandy Creek - William Sprague, who resides near Richland station, was found dead upon the roof of his dwelling house, where he had been engaged during the day in placing new roofing, at about four o'clock yesterday afternoon. There is but little travel in that vicinity and it is thought that he had been dead at least two hours when discovered. Soon after finding the body Dr. Frank A. Box, of Pulaski, an Oswego county coroner, was summoned. The coroner went to Richland station at about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon and after viewing the body and making a thorough investigation decided to hold an inquest at 10 o'clock to¬day. Mr. Sprague for some time past had been employed as night watchman at the Tollner Box Works in Pulaski and left for his home Tuesday to make some needed repairs to his house at Richland station. He had not complained of feeling unwell during the day. Coroner Box reported the cause of death as due to organic heart disease. The deceased was about 60 years of age, well known and highly respected. He had been in the employ of the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg railroad for about twenty years at Richland station. He was a member of Spring Brook lodge, No. 644, I. 0. 0. F., of Pulaski. He was a veteran of the Civil war and attached to the twenty-fourth regiment, New York infantry and was a member of J. B. Butler Post, No. 111, G. A. R. of Pulaski. He was well and favorably known in railroad circles. A widow and four children survive, Mrs. S. J. Hadley, of Syracuse; Mrs. Frank Roland, of Oswego; Mrs. Burt Woolover, Watertown; Orla Sprague, of Richland. Funeral Sunday at 12 at the house and at one o'clock at the church.
Newspaper Obituary - Monday, August 10, 1903 Syracuse Journal - Syracuse, New York - Sprague Funeral - Pulaski, August 10 - The funeral of William J. Sprague, whose sudden death occurred Wednesday, was held at the family home in Richland yesterday. Spring Brook Lodge, I. O. O. F., had charge of the services and extended an invitation to Pulaski Lodge and other members of the order in this vicinity to attend. Members of J. B. Butler post, G. A. R., of Pulaski, of which organization the deceased had long been a member, attended the obsequies.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 12, 1903 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Richland - William J. Sprague - This community was saddened to learn of the sudden death of William Sprague which occurred at his home and Richland, Wednesday afternoon, while making some needed repairs on the roof of his house and while thus engaged he was summoned to the land of eternal peace and rest. Coroner Box was called and reported the cause of his death due to organic heart disease. The deceased was born in Ellisburg, New York, July 22, 1846 and in 1863 enlisted in the 24th New York Calvary and he as well as others came very near losing their life, but he was permitted after a long severe illness to return home. February 6, 1869 he was united in marriage to Augusta Brewer, of Sandy Creek, who with four children now survive him. Mrs. S. J. Hadley, of Syracuse, Mrs. F. E. Rowland, of Oswego, Mrs. B. J. Woolever, of Watertown, and O. B. Sprague, of Richland. All of whom live to feel keenly the loss of husband and father. God’s ways are not ours and it may be he often separates our families here that they may be united hereafter. Summon to your aid and comfort, afflicted ones, his life of devotion, and when tempted to wish him back to suffer and to die again, let the thought of his present condition stifle each murmuring thought and drive from your lips each discontented expression. The master has said, “Blessed are those that mourn.” The subject of this sketch was made a member in the year 1889, of Spring Brook Lodge No. 646, I. O. O. F., of Richland, and also of Salmon River encampment No. 31, I. O. O. F. of Pulaski and he was a member of J. B. Butler Post No. 111, G. A. R., of this village. The funeral was held August 9, 1903 at the Church of Christ, of which he was a member. It was largely attended by friends and relatives, also by the Grand Army and Odd Fellows in a body. Rev. Cross, of Orwell, officiated. The text was, “I shall be satisfied when I wake with thy likeness,” Psalms xvii, 15. Words are not necessary here to extol the Christian character, the energetic nature of which all knew him best can appreciate. His family and a large circle of friends are left to mourn.
