The War in Vietnam, 1961 though 1975, cost 58,000 American lives, including four sons of valor from Akwesasne: SP4 Charles R. Martin killed in 1968 and awarded the Silver Star for Valor and Gallantry in Action Against the Enemy, Corporal Charles F. Rubado killed in 1968, SP4 Clifford L. Tarbell killed in 1970 and awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service, and Private William Tarbell killed in 1966

The Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall was in Massena July 2-8 as part of a regional recognition of the service and sacrifices of the many area men and women who served in Southeast Asia from 1959-1975. From Akwesasne, four men died in Vietnam. One was William Tarbell

Private William M Tarbell 20, St Regis Indian Reservation was killed in action Feb 26 1966. His mother Mrs Mamie LaFrance Tarbell now resides in Syracuse, his father Louis Curleyhead Tarbell died June 13 1959 at age 49. Burial will be made at St Regis . Full military rites will be accorded. Surviving are his mother, one brother Dennis Tarbell, two half brothers RIchard Cook and George Vincent both of Syracuse, four sisters: Margaret D'Gonzaque of Hawaii, Mrs Shirley Nora Tarbell, Calif, Dorothy Vickery, Mrs Billiam and a half sister Verna Cook, and grandmother Mrs Addie Lazore. He was a receipent of the Purple Heart.
