  • Notes
    • Mrs. Doris L. Wheeler Blount, 85, formerly of North Ridge Road, Lacoaa, died Sunday evening, June 10, 1984 at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Oswego, following a lengthy illness.

Born June 26, 1898 in Mannsville, a daughter, of the late Charles and Lydia Edden Wheeler, she attended Mannsville schools and was graduated from Pulaski High. School as valedictorian in 1915.

She attended the Pulaski Training Class of 1916.

Mrs. Blount taught school for two years and married F. Leland Blount on June 26, 1919 at Mannsville. The Blounts owned and operated a dairy farm on the North Ridge Road in Lacona for sixty years.

Mr. Blount died March 18, 1975, at age 82.

Mrs. Blount was joined with the Mannsville Methodist church at thirteen and was organist for eight years. She also taught a girls' Sunday School class for many years.

She transferred her membership to the Sandy Creek Methodist Church in 1919 and was active for many years in the W.S.C.S., pre-deceasor of today's United Methodist Women. She also taught primary Sunday School classes for several years, then was the teacher for fifteen years of the Adults' Foster Pratt Class.

She was also a member of the local W.C.T.U., and a member of Lake Ontario Chapter, No. 124, 0.E.S. for over fifty years, as well as a member of Sandy Creek Grange, No. 127, P. of H.

Mrs. Blount was an accomplished writer and had had many of her poems published in well known magazines. In later years copies of her poems, mounted on decorative wood plaques, local crafts shows.

She was a descendant of a early pioneer family. Her great-grandfather, Hicks Wheeler, traveled from Massachusetts by oxcart to settle east of Mannsville in the early 1800's. Her grandfather, George N. Wheeler, built the Mannsville United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two sons, T. Richard of Lacona and Derrill E. of Mannsville; 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Howard R. and Harold Wheeler, predeceased her.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, June 13, at the family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sandy Creek, with her grandson, Rev. Douglas Sheaf, pastor of the Bethel Assembly of God Church, Massena, officiating.

Arrangements were with the Summerville Funeral Home in Sandy Creek. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Northern Oswego County Ambulance, Box 113, Pulaski.

A few lines of poetry by Mrs. Blount written in remembrance of her father, perhaps best exemplify her strong feelings and faith:

      "...Sleep on, dear heart,
      nor dream that we forget,
      Each day our love goes
      winging out to you,
      At night our eyes with
      anguished tears are wet,
      As tender memories:
      pass in review;
      Only our faith in God
      can ease our'pain*
      For He has promised,
      "Ye shall live again!"
