- Online Obituary - On July 26, 2008 Dr. Harlan J. Howlett went home to God surrounded by his adoring family. Harlan was born January 15, 1924 to William S. Howlett and Lillie Bush Howlett in Pulaski, NY. Harlan enlisted in the Army in 1942. He served in "C" Battery, 33rd Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in the European Theater of Operations. He was awarded battle stars for Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Harlan was also awarded the Bronze Star. Harlan graduated from Cornell in 1951 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. He practiced in Pleasant Valley for nearly 40 years. On June 22, 1948 he married Ethel Nied. She predeceased him on January2, 1998. Harlan was a member of the NY State Veterinary Medical Society, St. John's Reformed Church in Red Hook, and a former member of the Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church. Over the years Harlan was involved in several community theater groups as a talented actor, stage manager, and set designer. A talented woodworking hobbyist, he restored antique furniture but specialized in the restoration of Old Town canvas and wood canoes. Harlan is survived by his four daughters: Kim Rosado of Staatsburg; Candace Shyer and husband Eric of Stephentown; Melissa Levy and husband Mike of Red Hook; and Coral Howlett of Saugerties. He is also survived by his sisters: Lois Roberts of Pulaski, Coral Rinaldo of Oneida, his brothers: William S. Howlett and wife Naomi of Texas, Charles Howlett and wife Marianne of Adams Center, and Carl Howlett of Pulaski, his seven grandchildren: William Rosado and wife Sabrina of Staatsburg, ETN Daniel Shyer of Virginia, Alec Rosado of California, Margaret Barie and husband Eric of Rouses Point, Sarah Grundman and husband Rob of Albany, Kimberly Shyer of Hudson, and Betsy Levy of Red Hook. Harlan also leaves one great-grandchild, Julius L. Rosado and one more on the way. Harlan is survived by many cousins, nephews, and nieces. A brother, Alfred, predeceased him. Harlan's family wishes to thank the following who treated him with respect, dignity, and great skill: Dr. Leopoldo Abis, Dr. Dmitri Alden, Dr. James Wing, and Hospice. There will be a private burial at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent in Harlan's memory to one of the following charities: Red Cross, Cornell University, or Hospice.
