Ralph D. Towles, 71, of 9318 Grove St., died Thursday at his home after a long illness. He had been under the care of his family and Hospice.
Mr. Towles worked with Lane Construction and also at Queens Dairy in Pierrepont Manor for 27 years, retiring in 1994.
Born Aug. 28, 1935, in the town of Ellisburg, son of Frank and Mabel Hess Towles, he attended Belleville Central School and worked on the Machold Farm in Ellisburg for several years.
He married Lavina E. "Lee" Leween on May 1, 1957, in Frederick, Md. The couple moved to the Adams area following their wedding and to their home on Grove Street in 1968. Mrs. Towles died Nov. 8, 2001.
Among his hobbies were swimming, skiing, watching football and baseball, playing golf and woodworking in his shop.
Surviving are four daughters and three sons-in-law, Terrie and Dean LaLone, Adams, Lori Barney, Adams Center, Sandra and Harley McConnell, Theresa, and Lena and Ronald McBride, Ellisburg; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas, Jody, and Rick and Judy, all of Adams; three brothers, Donald, Watertown, Raymond, Adams, and Alan, Belleville; four sisters, Shirley Stewart and Ruby Jackson, both of Watertown, Ruth Peters, Adams Center, and Rosemary Hedger, Adams, 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
A son, Randy D., died Aug. 27 in Lexington, Ky., one of 49 people killed when the plane they were in crashed trying to take off from Blue Grass Airport. Two sisters, Eva Sochia and Iva Bartlett, and five brothers, Alfred, John, Frances, Bert and Ronald Towles, also died before him.
There will be no funeral. Burial will be at the family's convenience.
Calling hours will be 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville.
