Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, February 14, 1996 Watertown Daily Times - Watertown, New York - Rev. Herbert J. Gordon Dies In Liverpool - The Rev. Herbert J. Gordon, 91, of 4302 1/2 Candlelight Lane, Liverpool, former pastor of the United Methodist parish of Brownville and Dexter, died Monday at his home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Liverpool United Methodist Church with the Rev. James M. LeGro officiating. Spring burial will be in Daysville Cemetery, Richland. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Maurer Funeral Home, Liverpool. Donations may be made to the Herb Gordon Fund for Full Accessibility, a project for handicapped accessibility to the Liverpool church, care of the church. Surviving are his wife, Cecile M.; a daughter, Maxene Mills, Newfield; a son, James M., Camden; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter and a niece. Born May 13, 1904, in Workington, England, son of the Rev. James and Mary Johnson Gordon, he earned a bachelor of theology degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, and also graduated from Auburn Seminary. When he was 20 years old, he was pastor of the East Troy (Pennsylvania) Methodist Church. He married Cecile Morton on September 9, 1932, in North Mexico Church with his father officiating. He was pastor of United Methodist churches in Ledyard, Navarino, Port Byron, Horseheads, Elmira and Wolcott. He was pastor of the Brownville and Dexter churches from July 2, 1969, to June 1972, when he retired from the Central New York Conference of the United Methodist Church. For 17 years, the Rev. Mr. Gordon remained active as minister of visitation at Liverpool United Methodist Church. He also served as associate pastor at University United Methodist Church, Syracuse. He had lived in Liverpool for 24 years. He was a life member of the Liverpool United Methodist Men's Club and of the Liverpool Rotary Club, receiving the Rotary's Paul Harris Fellow Award.
