Emmet Bumpus, 81 year resident, dies here Sunday
Emmett Bumpus, 81, a lifelong resident of Sandy Creek, died Sunday morning, June 25, 1950 at his home on Railroad street after a year's illness. He was a retired farmer and had been sexton of Woodlawn cemetery for many years. He was also custodian of the Annie P. Ainsworth Memorial library. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday from the family home, with Rev. Selden Ward, pastor of the Baptist church officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery, with Masonic funeral services conducted at the grave by members of Sandy Creek Lodge. Bearers at the funeral were Henry Corse, Calvin B. Chamberlain, Durl Clement, Wendell Sprague, W.A. Hoag and Thomas Hamer.
Born in Sandy Creek-Mr. Bumpus was born November 28, 1868 in Sandy Creek, his parents being E. G. and Justina (Sprague) Bumpus, July 3, 1890 he married Miss Nora Moore of Sandy Creek. About 1930 they sold the farm and moved to a home in the village, where Mrs. Bumpus died in April 1940.
August 8, 1947, Mr. Bumpus married Mrs. Julia Brown Lynch of Syracuse, who survives; also one son Leland Bumpus of Sandy Creek; three grandsons, Burton of Gowanda and William S. and Floyd of Sandy Creek; and four grandchildren.
He was a member of the FIrst Baptist Church here and of Sandy Creek Lodge No. 564 F. & A. M. Formally he belonged to Sandy Creek Grange.
