Merrill V. “Squirrel” Waggoner, 19, County Route 2, died Thursday in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse.
Mr. Waggoner died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday at his home.
The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church, Richland, with the Rev. Dr. A. Douglas Ferry, pastor, and the Rev. Thomas Howell officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 7385 Park St., Pulaski. Contributions may be made to Sandy Creek Central School treasurer, in care of Linda P. Taber.
Surviving are his father, George S. Waggoner, Orwell; his mother and stepfather, Ruth H. and Larry B. Skellington, both of Williamstown; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Doris L. Waggoner, Orwell; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Edna M. Haynes, Syracuse; two brothers, George S. and Joseph P. Waggoner, both of Orwell; a sister, Miss Annette L. Waggoner, Orwell; two stepbrothers, Charles B. Skellington, Williamstown, and Michael B. Welsh, Oshawa, Ont., and three stepsisters, Pamela R. Bush, Kimberly R. Skellington and Tamyra A. Skellington, all of Williamstown.
Born April 10, 1971, in Watertown, a son of George S. and Ruth Haynes Waggoner, he was a 12th grade student at Sandy Creek Central School, due to graduate in June.
Mr. Waggoner had been named to the merit and honor rolls at the school, and was a member of the varsity wrestling team in 1989. He had also completed a masonry course at the Oswego County Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
Mr. Waggoner was employed by Paulanjo’s Pizza, Pulaski.
He was an avid outdoorsman.
