Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, December 3, 1868 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Sad Accident - Between three and four o'clock last Sunday afternoon, and accident occurred at Port Ontario, by which three persons lost their lives. Four sailboats set out from Henderson about 10 am., to return home here, at the close of the fishing season, and, on reaching the Port, two of the boats, thinking the entrance difficult, on account of the storm and the roughness of the lake, were beached outside, and the persons on board walked up safely. The two others, however, endeavored to effect an entrance, but both were capsized, one without and one just within the pier. The former contained Mr. John Ingersoll, of Oswego, but for many years of this place, and Mr. William Scott, of Port Ontario, both of whom were drowned, after clinging to the boat for a short time, and before assistance could reach them. The other boat, having on board William W. Lillie and wife, and A. Samson, of this town, capsized about the same time, but all succeeded in clinging to the boat, except Lillie, who let go just as a relief boat from the Port came to their assistance. We are informed that the relief boat passed entirely over the capsized boat, somewhat injuring Samson, who clung fast, holding Mrs. Lillie also. Indeed, we understand that he succeeded two or three times in rescuing Mr. and Mrs. Lillie after they were washed from the boat, and restoring their lost hold. Strange to say, he has long been lame and blind in one eye, and yet accomplished so much. Lillie's body was found the next morning, about a mile from the scene of the calamity, but none of the others have been heard from. Mr. Ingersoll was about 69 years of age and leaves a wife and several grown-up children. Mr. Lillie about 23, and leaves a wife and one child. Mr. Scott about 41, and a bachelor. Lillie's funeral was attended, at his residence here, on Wednesday.Lilley drowned in the Lake along with John Ingersoll and William Scott. Mrs. Lilley and a Mr. Sampson survived.
