- Joseph P. Soule - died May 26, 1860, age 28 years. Son of Constant and Lucena Brace Soule.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, May 31, 1860 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Killed by Lightening - About 41/4 P.M. on Saturday, two men, Samuel Soule, bachelor, aged 63, and Joseph Soule, aged 28, married less than a year, were killed by lightening, near Page's Mill, a mile or more south of Port Ontario. They had been fishing, and, on their return, took shelter under and in a large button wood tree during a thunder shower. They were leaning against the tree when it was struck. David Russell and Charles A. Bradnor, who had also been fishing, happened to take shelter under the same tree, but, fearing the vivid lightening, removed a few feet from the trunk. Russell, who was about 16 feet distant, was shocked but not injured, and Bradnor, who was about 10 feet distant, was knocked over upon his hands, but without injury. Samuel Soule was killed dead by the stroke, but Joseph was alive long enough to say, in reply to a question of Bradnor, that he was hurt, after which he fell over dead. The bodies were carried to the house of Mr. Stephen Soule, brother of Samuel, where Dr. Tisdale (to whom we are indebted for our information) examined them on Sunday. Joseph Soule bore the marks of the electric fluid on his stomach and left side, and was quite warm about the stomach, although mortification had set in. The right shoulder of Samuel was much marked and scorched by the lightening.
