- Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, March 11, 1903 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - A correspondent from Mannsville under the date of March 6, says: Mr. Ira Balch, aged 64 years, well known by old residents of Oswego and Oswego Town, died at his home here, Saturday. The cause of his death was pneumonia, with which he had been sick less than a week, yet his death was expected, as his illness was very serious from the first. Mr. Balch was a man of kindly disposition and had many warm friendships. His genial demeanor and hearty handshake will long be remembered with pleasure. His funeral, held on Tuesday at 1 p.m., was largely attended, and all felt that a good neighbor had been taken from us. Deceased was born in the town of Orwell and when a boy, went to Oswego and was in the employ of John H. Mann in the milk business. Later he purchased of Mr. Mann his milk route and hired the farm now owned by the city as their almshouse, remaining there about twelve years, boarding the men and helping in the erection of that building. Later he sold his business to Mr. Turner and moved to Mannsville and purchased one of the best farms here. He leaves a wife, one son, one daughter, three sisters and three brothers, William, of Mannsville, Onin H., of Oswego, John of Orwell, and Mrs. Susannah Waterman, of New Haven, Harriet Beulah, of Elmira, Laura B. Marvin, of Aurora, Illinois.
