- Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, August 22, 1889 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Daysville - The following, which we quote from the Pan-Handle Advocate, of Piper City, Illinois, will be of interest to many of your readers: "An unusually sad calamity occurred this afternoon in the killing by lightning of Mrs. Newton Preman and her twelve-year-old daughter. While driving along the road, a strong bolt of lightning struck them, hitting the mother on the head, and passing down her left shoulder onto the little girl. Death must have been instantaneous. The bodies were found about an hour after the accident. The team was off the road eating at the hedge. A four months old baby in the buggy at the time escaped all injury, except the singeing of its hair." Mrs. Preman will be remembered as Miss Emma Sherman, a former resident here. She was a sister of Irving Sherman and Mrs. Hiram Herrick, of this place.
