- Newspaper Obituary - April 9, 1968 Watertown NY Daily Times - Stewart L. VanAlstyne Dead at 87 - Lafargeville - Stewart L. Van Alstyne, 87, Maple Street, died at home early this morning. He had been in ill health two years. The funeral will be Friday at 2pm at the family home with Rev. Clifford Sullivan, former pastor of LaFargeville Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Depauville cemetery. Friends may call at the family home Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon and evening. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eva M. Van Alstyne; five daughters, Mrs. Maurice (Margaret) Daily, Lafargeville, Mrs. Doris Getman, Mrs Roger (Pauline) Walti, and Mrs. Dennis (Sharon) Connell, all of Clayton; a son, Eugene Van Alstyne, Chaumont; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Frank (Winnie) Ostrander, Brewerton, and Mrs. Nick (Ella May) Kendrat, Sandy Creek; a stepson, Walter Stewart, Syracuse; a sister Mrs. Fred (Florence) George, Hannibal; 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Born in Depauville, May 5, 1880, a son of Secord and Sarah Empey Van Alstyne, he had lived in the Lafargeville section most of his life and worked as a farmer and paperhanger. On Sept 18, 1907 he married Miss Ella Haller. She died Jan 27, 1937. He married Eva May Nichols Stewart on Feb 24, 1940. Mr. Van Alystne was a life member of the LaFargeville Volunteer Fire department and a member of the LaFargeville grange.
