- Newspaper Obituary - May 16, 1955 Syracuse Post Standard - Syracuse, New York - Woman, 74, Killed Crossing Street In Central Square - Central Square - Mrs. Grace Potter, 74, was killed about 9:30 p. m. yesterday when she was stuck by a car as she was crossing S Main St. She was a part time domestic for Miss Sarah Howard of Fulton st with whom she lived. Mrs. Potter was crossing to the east side of the street so she could walk on a sidewalk on her way home from a visit with her daughter Mrs. Vira Hayes, 50. Mrs. Hayes accompanied her mother to the street. When the women reached the center of the street, Mrs. Hayes stopped but her mother continued on into the path of a northbound car operated by Sgt/1c Leland J. McLaughlin, 20, of Ithaca RD 4. The driver who was not held is station at Camp Drum. Trooper R. Orr of the Pulaski substation said Mrs. Potter was thrown more than 50 feet by the impact. Dr. E. G. Murphy pronounced her dead of a fractured skull, crushed chest, internal injuries and a compound fracture of the left leg. District Attorney Richard N. Donovan acting as county coroner issued a verdict of accidental death. The body was released to the Traub Funeral Home
