Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 1, 1894 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Mr. Eliphalet Calkins - Mr. Calkins, one of our oldest citizens, died last Saturday morning. He was born in the town of Schuyler, Herkimer county, New York, in August, 1819. He was one of a family of fifteen children, all having one mother - five brothers and ten sisters. They all lived to grow up, were married, and united with the church of Christ. Rev. Daniel Calkins, their father, was a preacher of the gospel for forty years. Mr. Joseph Calkins, of Palermo, eighty years of age, the only surviving brother, and eight sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hollis, of Sandy Creek; Mrs. Rachel Bettinger, of Mannsville; Mrs. Abigail Prime, of Sandy Creek; Mrs. Fannie Houghtaling, of Fulton; Mrs. Amy Lester, of Mannsville, Mrs. Susan Dunsmore and Mrs. Helen Howard, of Volney, and Mrs. Nancy Braga, of Fulton were all at the funeral services. When four years old, the subject of this sketch was brought to this county, where he has ever since resided; in 1846 he was married to Miss Mary A. Ludington, of Fulton, New York, and they have lived about forty years on Mill street, and during these, years he has conducted the same business at the saw mill, being respected by everybody for his intelligence, industry and integrity. He united with the Pulaski Congregational church in the year 1864, and has been a faithful and useful member up to the time of his death. Mr. Calkins went to Oberlin, Ohio, in June, to attend the college commencement exercises, as his daughter, Miss Claribel Calkins was one of the graduates of '94. After his return from Oberlin, the very last of June, he visited friends in Mannsville, although his health was rapidly failing. His widow and three children survive him, Miss Helen Calkins, Mr. J. Herbert Calkins, and Miss Claribel Calkins. The funeral services at the house, at 2 o'clock on Monday, wore attended by his family and near relatives; the public exercises at the Congregational church, at half-past two, were largely attended. Rev. A. S. Emmons, the pastor, paid a well-deserved tribute to the Christian character and life of Mr. Calkins, who had served the church as a deacon, and in many capacities. The pall bearers were Messrs. Robert D. Gillespie, L. Ling, W. B. Dixson and N. B. Smith.
