- Williamstown, Feb 2 - Mrs. Venila Nicholls, widow of the late John Nicholls, passed away very suddenly on Wednesday afternoon, January 26th, at five o'clock, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Albert Harris aged seventy-four years and two months. Mrs. Nicholls for several years had suffered from heart trouble and this winter had the grippe which had weakened her greatly. But for two weeks prior to her death she had felt better than usual. During the day she had assisted her daughter about the housework and did some mending. In the afternoon she laid down to rest was was her custom and fell asleep. Later the daughter hearing her as if trying to cough, went to her side and asked if there was anything she wanted. She gave one gasp and without any emotion fell asleep, never to wake again.
Mrs. Nichols was born in this town Her maiden name was Venila Stewart. She had lived in York Mills and Amboy, and came back to Williamstown to reside about eighteen years ago. Her only child, Miss Jennie Nicholls, was married to Albert Harris about ten years ago, and with them she has made her home for some time. She was a faithful member of the Methodist church , always in her place when her health would permit. She united with the church some fifty years ago, and her life has reflected her Christian character.
She is survived by the daughter named and two grandchildren, Venila and John Nicholls Harris; also two sisters, the Misses Mary and Elnora Stewart.
The funeral was very largely attended from the Methodist church at 2 p.m. Sunday. Her pastor, Rev. A. A. Lawrence, had charge of the service and delivered a very impressive sermon. The choir rendered three beautiful pieces ""My Savior First of All, " "My Jesus as Thou Wilt" and "Asleep in Jesus." The floral pieces were beautiful. Funeral director Castle of Camden had charge of the funeral, and old neighbors, Thomas Look, Edward Whaley, Robert Brown and William Cutler, laid the remains to rest in Fairview Cemetery.
