    • Newspaper Obituary - Monday, December 20, 1937 Wilkes-Barre Times Leader - Veteran Fireman Claimed By Death - Ill with complications for the past several months, James H. Sprake, veteran fireman and charter member of Elm Hill Hose Company No. 3, died Sunday afternoon at 5:30 in the family home, 55 Jeanette street. His passing is regretted by a large following of friends throughout the West Side. Born in England, 77 years ago, he came to Plymouth at the age of 15 and has since resided here. For many years he worked as a breaker boy at the Haddock No. 12 Colliery and later was employed for 30 years as a hoisting engineer for that company. For the past 17 years, Mr. Sprake was employed as a stoker engineer at the local plant of the Luzerne County Gas and Electric Company. Mr. Sprake was an active member of the Elm Hill Hose Company for many years and had served the borough for many years as chief of the fire alarm system. He was the last surviving charter member of that company. Surviving are these children: Maude and Edna, at home; Mrs. Harry K. Search, Wilkes-Barre, Mrs. R. R. Daniels, Haggerstown, Md.; one brother, Edmund T. Sprake, Plymouth and two sisters, Mrs. Emily Armitage, Buffalo, and Mrs. Sadie Allabaugh, Philadelphia. His widow died 11 years ago. Eight grandchildren and one great grandchild also survives.

      Newspaper Obituary - December 20, 1937 Wilkes Barre Record - Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania - Veteran Resident Of Plymouth Dies - James H. Sprake, 77, 55 Jeanette Street, Plymouth, died yesterday afternoon at 5:30 at his home after a lingering illness. He was born in England and came to this country 63 years ago and has since resided in Plymouth. Mr. Sprake worked at No. 12 Mines as a breaker boy and later served as hoisting engineer at that colliery for 30 years for the Haddock Coal Company. For the last 17 years he has been employed at the Luzerne County Gas & Electric Company plant at Pymouth as a stoker engineer. Mr. Sprake was the last surviving charter member of the Elm Hill Hose Company No. 3 of Plymouth and was active in that department. Surviving are the following daughters: Maude and Edna, at home; Mrs. Harry K. Search, city; Mrs. R. R. Daniels, Hagerstown, Md.; a brother, Edmund T. Sprake of Plymouth, and two sisters: Mrs. Emily Armitage of Buffalo and Mrs. Sadie Laubaugh, Philadelphia. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. His wife died 11 years ago.
