    • Lewis was born in the western end of Richland township, and raised on the lake shore farmlands that had been cultivated by his family for generations. Lewis left his parents home and became initially estranged due to his " profligate ways". On march 14, 1917 the elder Tilkins posted a notice on the front page of the Pulaski Democrat advising potential creditors that they would not be responsible for the indebtedness of Lewis. Lewis married Florence Brown in 1924, and lived in a very small house on Canning Factory Rd. Following Florence's death, Tilkins left for the west coast and seldom returned home.
