    • Newspaper Obituary - May 14, 1966 Wilkes-Barre Times Leader Evening News - Joseph T. Kennedy - J. T. Kennedy, Mine Union Official, Dies - Former Resident Served In Governor's Cabinet - Funeral Wednesday - Joseph T. Kennedy, prominent official with the United Mine Workers of America who at one time served as Penna. Secretary of Mines, died this morning at 7:30 at his home, 1048 Dead Run Drive, McLean, Va. A native of Larksville and long time resident of Wilkes-Barre, he was 62. Mr. Kennedy had been in ill health for several months but was apparently on the road to recovery when he was stricken today. An administrative employe of District 1, United Mine Workers of America, since 1929, Mr. Kennedy first served as secretary to John Boylan, then District 1 president. He served in that capacity until 1927, when he was made District 1 statistician. - In Governor's Cabinet - In 1945, Mr. Kennedy assumed the duties as secretary to the then international Secretary - Treasurer Thomas Kennedy. They were not related. Mr. Kennedy retained his position as Secretary of Miners under Gov. David Lawrence until April 1, 1960, when he resigned and returned to the United Mine Workers in an executive capacity under International President Thomas Kennedy. During the years he served as a State mine official and with the UMWA, Mr. Kennedy resided frist on Amherst avenue then Old River Road in Wilkes-Barre. Prior to his long tenure as a mine official, Mr. Kennedy worked as a contract miner in the Loree Division of the Hudson Coal Company and held many offices in Local 20, UMWA, at the Loree Colliery. At the time of his death, Mr. Kennedy served as director of Contracts Division, United Mine Workers, in Washington, D.C. - Larksville Native - Mr. Kennedy was born in Larksville on December 2, 1904, the son of the late Edward and Catherine Fleming Kennedy and attended St. Vincent's School in Plymouth. He was graduated from Coughlin High School and the University of Scranton. He was also attended Columbus Law School, Washtingon, D.C. While a resident of Wilkes-Barre he was a member of St. Therese's Church, Old River Road, and it societies. After moving to McLean, Va., some five years ago, Mr. Kennedy was a member of St. Luke's Church in that community and was a member of the Holy Name Society. - Funeral Here - Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Flaherty, a native of Wilkes-Barre; children, Joseph P. Kennedy, McLean, Va.; daughter, Mrs. Margaret T. Schuler, Vienna, Va.; Miss Patricia Kennedy, at home; sisters, Mrs. Catherine Reilly, Short Hills, N.J.; Miss Mary Kennedy, Newark, N.J.; a brother, Phillip Kennedy, Plymouth; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held from the McLaughlin Funeral Home, 142 South Washington Street, Wednesday morning at 9 with a Requiem Mass at 9:30 in St. Therese's Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Monday and Tuesday, 3 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m.
