  • Notes
    • Homer Melvin West - April 14, 1847 - January 1, 1913. Son of David D. and Ada H. Burch West. Husband of Ann Eliza Hilton West. Married January 13, 1869 at Orwell, New York.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, January 15, 1913 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - Homer Melvin West - Homer Melvin West was born at Stillwater, Orwell, New York, April 14, 1847, and passed away at Orwell at eleven o'clock January 1, 1913, aged 65 years. He was the son of David and Ada (Burch) West and grandson of Ira West, Sr. On January 13, 1869, at Orwell, New York, he married Anna E. Hilton, who, with two daughters, Mrs. Claude Miner, of Orwell, and Miss Anna Belle West, of Pulaski, survive him. A son, Merwin, their firstborn, died at the age of four years. In 1876 he bought the farm formerly owned by his uncle, Ira West, Jr., which he occupied for twenty-seven years, removing in 1903 to the place near Orwell village where the family now reside. Homer West was an active member of the Patrons of Husbandry for about twenty-five years. He was justice of the peace for over twenty successive years. Also acceptably filled various other town offices as town auditor, etc., for years. He was greatly interested in the recent rehabilitation of the Pekin church, giving time, energy and means to the work. Homer West was a citizen and the community could ill afford to lose, a man above reproach, ever always on the side of all that went for right, justice and clean living, a man industrious to a fault, and whatever he undertook, he sustained every good cause by word and effort. His hospitable home was ever open to the representatives of the good, especially religion and temperance. Of this last he was ever a loyal supporter, and his greatest desire was to live to see the downfall of the liquor traffic. To this end it was his firm belief that the first step would be the granting of suffrage to women, which cause he loyally supported. It seemed the irony of fate that his death should have been caused by an accident due to liquor. On August 30, 1912, while Mr. West was driving home from Richland, a drunken man drove recklessly into his carriage overturning it. Mr. West sustained serious internal injuries which proved fatal after four months of keen and constantly increasing suffering which finally reached a point almost beyond endurance. The funeral was held at Orwell Union church, Saturday, January 4, 1913, Rev. Spencer Owens officiating, Walter Clement assisting. In response to the repeated requests of the departed, Walter Clement spoke of his last days, when Mr. West knowing his time was short, felt that he was not satisfied, that he needed more than morality to rest upon and with the same decision and energy which had always been among his leading characteristics, he sought and obtained pardon and peace of his God. Henceforth his only regret was that he had not earlier given his life to the services of the God he now loved and rejoiced in, and his greatest desire to depart and be with Him. His words, his prayers, the hymns sung by him in weakness and pain will long be remembered by those privileged to hear them. “Twilight and the evening bell, And after that, the dark; But may there be no sadness of farewell When I embark. For though from out of the realms of time and space My bark may bear me far, I hope to meet my Pilot face-to-face When I have crossed the bar. -E.A.D.M.
