- Viola "Vi" Abel, 95, of Sarasota, died March 26, 2010.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be at 2 p.m. April 23 at Alderman Oaks, 727 Hudson Ave., Sarasota.
She was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Harold Abel.
Survivors include her son, John Pat McGrath of Madison, Conn.; stepdaughters Audrey Adam of Stonington, Conn., and Frances M Sullivan of Dunedin; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
She was born July 10, 1914, to Nellie and Sam Bass in Pulaski, N.Y.
Vi graduated from Sandy Creek High School in Sandy Creek, N.Y., in 1931. She went on to further her education, acquiring undergraduate and master degrees from New York University Stern School and Columbia University.
She then started her career in occupational therapy for the State of New York in the Department of Mental Health, advancing over the years to the position of director of occupational therapy. Retiring in 1969, she came to Sarasota from Albany, N.Y.
Vi was a happy and prolific gardener and had been very active over the years in community gardening organizations. She was a member of the Sarasota Garden Club, Marie Selby Gardens and the Sarasota Succulent Society, of which she was a lifetime member. She was also an avid button collector and was a member of the Tamiami Trail Button Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sarasota Succulent Society, 1310 38th St., Sarasota, FL 34234.
