Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, August 18, 1920 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - After rather a prolonged illness which culminated in Bright’s disease, Mr. Rufus Stevens crossed the Great Divide, August 3, 1920, surrounded by his wife and children who had gathered to pay their last tribute. Mr. Stevens was born at Antwerp, Jefferson County, October 10, 1847 [sic], and at an early age came to live in Orwell where he met and married his wife, Nellie Baker, and where he lived for the remainder of his life. He is survived by a widow and four children: Mrs. Allen Dale and Mrs. Charles Carpenter of Orwell, Mr. Charles Stevens, of Oneida and Mrs. Frederick Hallenbeck, of Norfolk, Virginia. He also leaves two brothers and two sisters: Mr. A. M. Stevens and Mrs. Mary Stowell of Orwell, and Mr. William Stevens and Mrs. Cummings of Lacona. The funeral took place at his late home in Orwell, August 6, where a large number of relatives and friends from surrounding country gathered and accompanied the remains to the place of interment, Evergreen cemetery, Orwell. Rev. Walter Clement of Taberg, formerly of Orwell, conducted the funeral service. The bearers were six nephews, Mr. M. C. Snow, of Mexico; Dr. A. G. Dunbar, of Pulaski; Mr. Leon Dunbar, of Richland; Mr. Frank Dunbar, of Sandy Creek; Mr. Chester Dunbar, of Copenhagen and Mr. Earl Lester of Orwell. There was a profusion of cut flowers, potted plants and a beautiful pillow with the legend “Father”, gifts of kind and loving hearts and messengers of tender sympathy. He lived his allotted three-score years and ten, a respected citizen by all, a husband and father loved and honored. He had no enemies. The services rendered by relatives and friends and their kindness and tender sympathy will remain a pleasant memory as well as a keen satisfaction to the bereaved family.
