Military Service: Veteran of the United States Navy during World War II; died in action at Iwo Jima, Japan; Rank: Pharmacist's Mate Third Class. Son of Herbert Daniel and Nellie Olive Woods Clement. [Note: Although his name appears on the stone with his parents in this cemetery, Charles is buried in National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific located in Honolulu, Hawaii, Plot F., Row 0, Grave 445; date of burial March 21, 1949.]
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, April 11, 1945 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Charles Clement Killed in Iwo Jima Fight - Mrs. Nellie Woods Clement of Orwell was notified by the Navy Department recently that her son, PhM 3/c Charles Clement, 20, had been killed in action on Iwo Jima. The date of his death was not contained in the announcement. Charles Clement, a 1942 graduate of Pulaski Academy with a high scholastic record, enlisted in the Navy shortly after leaving school and had seen much active service. At Iwo Jima he was with a Navy medical unit attached to the Marine Corps. He was a son of Mrs. Clement in the late Herbert Clement of Orwell. Besides his mother, who is employed at the Oswego County Sanatorium, he is survived by a brother, William Clement, of Pulaski.
