      Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, March 3, 1948 Oswego Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Mrs. Balch Dies, Native of Scriba - 89-Year-Old Woman Composed Her Own Obituary 10 Years Ago - Mrs. Sarah E. Balch, 89, who died early Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Abbie Wagner, 32 East Fifth street, where she had resided several years, wrote her own obituary 10 years ago. Mrs. Balch left the sketch of her life with Newton M. Coe, funeral director of Lycoming, with a request that it be used exactly as written. The obituary notice is as follows: “Mrs. Sarah E. Balch was born in the town of Scriba, December 21, 1858. She was a daughter of the late Morgan and Frances Barden Himes. Mrs. Balch resided in the town of Scriba until the year 1871, when she removed with her parents to the town of Orwell. Mrs. Balch was married in 1879 to John Balch in the town of Orwell, where they resided until the year 1906, then she moved to Oswego where she has resided ever since. She was a member of Trinity Methodist church, the Women’s Relief Corps of which she was the oldest member, being a member 55 years (at the time the notice was written). She was also a member of the Women's Benefit Association of Rochester and a member of the Auxiliary of the Spanish War Veterans of Orwell, also a member of the former Missionary Society of the Orwell church. Mrs. Balch is survived by three sons, Raymond Balch of Emporium, Pennsylvania, John Balch and Orlo Balch of Rochester; 14 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lucius Himes of North Scriba; one sister, Mrs. Mary Jewell of Hollywood, California, and several nieces and nephews.” Mr. Coe announced the funeral arrangements were incomplete and would be announced later.
