- Mary Sheldon Davis - November 11, 1826 - May 17, 1890. Daughter of George and Anna Bliss Sheldon. Wife of Seymour Currier Davis.
Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, May 22, 1890 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Orwell - Entered into rest May 17, 1890, Mrs. Seymour Davis, aged 63 years. The subject of this sketch, Miss Mary Shelden, was born November 11, 1826, in North Adams, Massachusetts. At the age of two years she removed with her parents to the town of Lee, Oneida county, New York. In July 8th, 1846, she was united in marriage with Mr. Seymour Davis, who survives her, and on March 4th, 1851, they settled in Orwell where, with the exception of four years spent in Richland, they have resided on the same farm. One son and a daughter was born to them, Mr. Henry Davis, now owner of the old homestead, and Mrs. Silas Herrington of Marshall, Minnesota, on whom this sad bereavement falls with a heavy blow. Mrs. Davis was a lady of sterling worth and admirable qualities. All who knew her loved and respected her. She was a friend to the poor, a kind and obliging neighbor, a loving wife and mother. She united with the Congregational society thirteen years ago, Rev. Frank Greely being the pastor at that time. She was one of the pioneers of the town and lived to see beautiful homes and fertile fields take the places of rude cabins and the forest trees, and she was often heard to say, “Those early times of hardship were the happiest of my life.” The past ten years her health has been very poor, she being often confined to her room for weeks; but her cheerful and pleasant ways made the sick room one to be sought and never avoided. Her last sickness which was of only about one week in duration, proved to be heart failure, and being fully aware of the fact that her time was short she finished up the remainder of a well spent life in arranging matters for the future comfort of the loved ones she must leave; nothing was neglected, all done in that same orderly quiet manner which characterized her whole life, and trusting in her Saviour she passed away. The funeral was held at her late residence, Wednesday, May 21, Rev. James Douglas conducting the services. She was buried in Evergreen cemetery in this village. The afflicted family have the sincere sympathy of all.
