Newspaper Obituary - Thursday, February 4, 1960 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - John Montieth Dies January 29 - John D. Montieth, 97, a retired school teacher and farmer of Vorea, died Friday forenoon January 29, 1960 at the Evergreen nursing home in Pulaski where he had been a patient more than a year. Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Foster funeral home with the Rev. Donald Hulbert of the Vorea church officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Orwell. He is survived by one son, Everett Montieth who lives in Vorea on the family homestead; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. His wife, Mrs. Gertrude Grinnals, to whom he was married June 12, 1895, died in 1928. - Born at Orwell - Mr. Montieth was born at Orwell December 2, 1863, the son of John and Abigail Vary Montieth. His early life was spent in that vicinity where he taught schools at Chateaugay, Vorea, Smartville and the Littlejohn district at Redfield, near what is now the Deer Park. The Littlejohn district was named for D. C. Littlejohn, owner of a large tract of timber in that vicinity, and who was at one time a member of the state assembly from Oswego county. After his marriage to Miss Gertrude Grinnals on June 12, 1885, in the town of Orwell, he took up farming at Vorea, which he continued until his retirement in 1943. He has spent several years in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Webb at Orwell. Mrs. Montieth died in 1928. - Member of Vorea Church - Mr. Montieth was a member of the Vorea church. He spent several years in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Webb at Orwell before coming to the Evergreen nursing home in October of 1958. He observed his 96th birthday with a birthday cake and callers at the nursing home a year ago.
