Newspaper Article - Wednesday, March 2, 1927 Pulaski Democrat - Pulaski, New York - A Veteran of the Civil War Saw Real Service and Suffered Bodily Affliction - Last week brief mention was made in the Democrat of the death of Veteran Robert Armstrong, at Orwell. In looking up the military record of Mr. Armstrong we learn something interesting and credible to the dead soldier. He resided at Plattsburgh and enlisted at Burlington, Vermont, at the first call of President Lincoln, for volunteers and went with the “Three Hundred Strong.” He served in the 14th United States Regulars, Company G, for the three years enlistment, which, at the time of the first call seemed would be the extreme limit of the conflict, for it was believed the South would be whipped in less time than that. At the end of three years Robert Armstrong had no desire to retire but re-enlisted and went back to serve the close of the war. It was at the battle of Gettysburg he met a terrible fate, which was the loss of his left leg. At the close of the war he came to this part of the country and made his home at North Williamstown. Later in life he came to Orwell to reside. It was a peculiar coincident that comrade of his, Mason Myers, met with a similar loss as his and the two men have been close comrades and friends since they met on the battlefield at Gettysburg, sympathizing with each other in the loss of their legs and sharing with each other in the purchase of shoes, for one lost a right and the other a left leg. Mr. Armstrong was 87 years of age. He leaves a son, Frank Armstrong, of Flint, Michigan, and a daughter, Mrs. Claude Bennett, of Syracuse, besides a grandson, Robert E., of Orwell and two granddaughters, Mrs. Nellie King, of Buffalo and Mrs. Pearle Hilton of Syracuse. Funeral services were held from the house at 2 o'clock Thursday last, Rev. Giuliano officiating. Burial at Evergreen cemetery.
