Newspaper Obituary - Sunday, November 22, 1896 - Wilkes-Barre Record - PLYMOUTH'S DEATH RATE - The Recent Typhold Fever Epidemic Was a Deadly Sort - During the summer months the threatened epidemic of typhoid fever at Plymouth created general alarm throughout the county. Fortunately the scare is now about over and the residents of old Shawnee breathe easier. From time to time the Leader published accurate amounts of the progress of the disease and gave the names of those who suffered from its ravages. There were about one hundred in all and twenty, or one fifth of the number sick died from its effects. Among them were: (Excerpt) Charles Sprake, September 20; (Excerpt).
From this it will be seen that Plymouth's death rate has been greater in proportion to population than that of any other city or town in Europe or America. Chicago ranks next to Shawnee.
