Melvin E. Willis, 64, of North Street Road died Monday at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Willis was a native of Syracuse. He was the co-owner and operator of Mel's Tree Service in Auburn and also operated Mel's Pumpkin Patch on North Street Road. Mr. Willis also was a retired operating engineer and formerly was employed with Red Star Express Lines.
Mr. Willis was a member of First United Methodist Church and Local 545, International Union of Operating Engineers. He was a past master of St. Paul's Lodge 124, F&AM, a past patron of Salem Town Chapter 58, OES, an adviser to Auburn Assembly 3 of the Rainbow Girls and a former member of Anar Grotto and the Sennett Fire Department. Mr. Willis was an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth "Betsy"; two sons, James H. and Paul M., both of Auburn; three daughters, Melanie Taylor of Fort Mill, S.C., Donna Ryan of Elk Grove, Calif., and Sharon Forbes of Port Byron; his father, Harley E. Willis of Syracuse; two brothers, Daniel E. and Ervin, both of Syracuse; two sisters, Mildred Waddel and Olive Craw, both of Syracuse; eight granddaughters; an aunt; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Langham Funeral Home. Burial will be in Soule Cemetery, Sennett.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 91 E. Genesee St.
