- "A Fulton man, who used a wheel chair, died Tuesday from injuries he suffered after apparently dropping a cigarette on himself the previous night and setting a blanket on fire, city police and fire officials said.
Jerry Kerfien, 48, was pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m. by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office, Fulton Deputy Police Chief Peter Franco said.
City firefighters responded at 9:48 p.m. Monday to a fire at Apartment G-2 at Pathfinder Courts on Emery Street, Fire Chief Anthony Gorea said.
One of Kerfien's relatives, who declined to give her name, said Kerfien used a wheelchair because of [Baker's] Muscular Dystrophy.
The fire was confined to the chair, which was in the living room, Gorea said. Kerfien suffered second and third degree burns.
...
Kerfien was taken to A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital before he was taken to the burn center at University Hospital in Syracuse."
