    • Newspaper Obituary - Tuesday, October 31, 1939 The Winona Daily News - Winona, Minnesota - Grandma Stinson Dies at Age of 99 Following Illness - Came to Northwest With Father When a Girl of Nine Years. - Mrs. Candace "Grandma" Stinson, one of Winona's oldest citizens and a resident of Winona county since 1866, died at 12:45 p.m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Irene Hahn, at 655 Huff street. She had celebrated her 99th birthday June 21 and had been ill for nine weeks. Mrs. Stinson was born at Watertown, N.Y., June 27, 1840, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gegarry, a merchant. She came to Adams county, Wisconsin, with her father when she was nine years old and spent her girlhood and young womanhood there. She was married in 1859 to Henry Stinson. Mr. and Mrs. Stinson purchased a 160-acre farm in the town of Pleasant Hill in the district then known as Stinson ridge. The venerable Winonan had celebrated her birthday Jun 27 with a birthday dinner and open house. She had hoped to live to be 100 years old. As late as June she was able to walk downtown and call on her friends. She attributed her longevity to the fact that she led a happy, normal life. Visiting friends was one of her greatest pleasures. Most person knew her only as “Grandma” Stinson. Her husband was a civil war veteran who served with the 51st Wisconsin volunteers. He died in 1904 at the age of 72. Mrs. Stinson had resided in Winona for the last 36 years. She was an active woman and oftend recalled clearly the privations of the pioneering days in Winona county. Mrs. Stinson is survived by five living children, one son and four daughters. They are Cyrus Stinson, Mrs. C. W. Lewis, Mrs. Hahn and Mrs. Frank Ives of Winona and Mrs. J. F. Karsten, Rochester. The other survivors are 22 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

      Newspaper Obituary - Friday, November 3, 1939 The Winona Daily News - Funeral of Mrs. Candace Stinson - Funeral services for Mrs. Candace "Grandma" Stinson were conducted at 1:30 p.m. today at Central Methodist Church, Dr. H. D. Henry officiating. Preliminary services were conducted at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Irene Hahn, 655 Huff street. Burial was in Busch cemetery, Ridgeway. Pallbearers were six grandsons, Leonard and Gorden Karsten, Harry and Ralph Ives, Donald Hahn and Dewey Stinson.
