- Newspaper Obituary - Saturday, February 29, 1992 Post-Standard - Syracuse, New York - Elmer James Roberts, 64, of Krebs Road died Thursday in Tampa, Fla. Mr. Roberts died from black water fever, a form of malaria he contracted while building a missionary church in Niger, Africa. Mr. Roberts had traveled to Africa several times to visit his daughter Julie Nunemaker and her missionary husband. Two years ago, he and a few others from Calvary Baptist Church in Pulaski scheduled a working visit and helped build a drainage canal in Niger. While there, Elmer Roberts was bitten by a female mosquito carrying the illness - a form of malaria for which most visitors are not vaccinated. Roberts returned to Pulaski and left with his wife for their new Florida home on Feb. 1. By Feb. 7, Roberts thought he had the flu. He was too sick to celebrate his anniversary on Feb. 8. When Roberts did not respond to antibiotics doctors prescribed for his flu symptoms, doctors traced the illness to his trip in Niger. A native of Rodman, Mr. Roberts lived in Pulaski since 1946. He retired in 1989 after two years as a maintenance supervisor with the Springbrook Apartments in Pulaski and previously was employed 10 years with Howards Heating and Plumbing Co. Mr. Roberts was employed 20 years with Marsellus Casket Co. until 1977. Mr. Roberts was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Richland. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Lois H.; three sons, Thomas A. and Michael, both of Pulaski, and William J. of Orwell; four daughters, Sandra Cornell of Fulton, Julie Nunemaker of Niger, Cindy Roberts of Tampa, Fla., and Valerie Redhead of Oneida; a brother, William of Mexico; four sisters, Edna Chrysler of Rome, Doris Alcombrack and Dorothy Bauder, both of Watertown, and Mildred Dana of Sandy Creek; and 13 grandchildren. Services will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Calvary Baptist Church, Richland. Spring burial will be in South Richland Cemetery, Fernwood.
