      Richard L. Guga, 83, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2024 at Samaritan Keep Home where he was a resident.

      Calling hours will be held from 4-6 PM on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. The funeral service will be on Friday, September 6, at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in North Watertown Cemetery.

      Richard was born on April 14, 1941, in Watertown, the first-born son of the late John P. and Loretta H. (Layton) Guga. Following his high school education, he served as an officer in the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Following his military service, he attended Onondaga Community College for undergraduate studies in Education. He went on to graduate from SUNY Oswego with a Master of Education. Mr. Guga was a dedicated history teacher at Indian River Central School District as well as Jefferson Community College. Teaching was his passion. While attending a teacher’s year-long exchange program in England, he had tea with Queen Elizabeth, a memory he recalled fondly.

      In 1964, he married Dorothy Stewart from Fabius, New York.

      Richard was a creative mind with many hobbies including cooking, music, traveling, entertaining, watercolor painting, working with his hands, building things, golfing, and crafting.

      He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, the US Navy Reserves, the Parkinson’s Group, and the Crescent Yacht Club.

      Survivors include his former wife, Dorothy Guga; five children, Karen Guga, Richard “Rick” Guga II, Barb Guga, Janet (Scott) Willett, and Mike (Carrie) Guga; 11 grandchildren, RJ Ward, Nikkia Raso, Katrena Lasiter, Sarah Hulett, Corey Ward, Jaden Guga, Simarra Willett, Miranda Bearup, Addison Guga, Joey Bearup, and Griffin Guga; 7 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Jaelyn, Dominik, Lyla, Harper, Amelya, and Mila; 2 sisters and 1 brother, Marilyn Gardner, John (Barbel) Guga, and Nancy (Marty) Shatz; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
