    • Newspaper Obituary - June 9, 1960 Sandy Creek News - Youth 18 Loses Life By Drowning - Darl Louis Stewart, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Stewart of Ridge Road, Lacona, was drowned when an automobile plunged off Route 23 near Oneonta and into the Susquehanna river between 3 and 3:30am Tuesday, June 7, 1960. A companion, Ronald Matteson of North Rose, was drowned also. Police said wheel tracks indicated that the car failed to negotiate a sharp turn in the highway, traveled about 200 feet along the roadway and plunged over a 37 foot embankment into the river. A heavy fog prevailed at the estimated time of the accident. Oneonta fire department, personnel, and state troopers recovered the bodies, which were not in the car. Both men were employed by the Slayer system , a food service, at Oneonta State Teachers college, Mr. Matteson having been assistant manager of the company. Mr. Darl Louis Stewart was born August 10, 1941 at Mannsville, a son of Gilbert and Stella Kenney Stewart. He attended the Mannsville school and also attended school at Tully. The family formerly lived at Tully before moving to Lacona about a year ago where Gilbert Stewart is employed on one of the Harry Elkins farms. Darl Stewart had been employed by the Slater system at Oneonta since May 4. Surviving Family He is survied by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Stewart of Sandy Creek R.F.D. his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Stewart of Lacona and by eight brothers and sisters, Beverly, Gordon, Gilbert, Carolyn, Paula, Pamela, Mitchell and Michael Stewart at home; also by uncles and aunts and cousins. His funeral service will be held at 2pm Friday at the Weston and Woodard funeral home, Sandy Creek, the Rev. George Pattington, pastor of the Boylston Wesleyan Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are from 7 to 9 Thursday evening.
