    • Harold F. Smith - March 11, 1961 - May 29, 1968. Son of Clair Robert and Mary Agnes Vickery Smith.
Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, May 29, 1968 The Palladium Times - Oswego, New York - Father Had Died In Car Crash - 7-Year-Old Boy Dies In Altmar Fire; Mother Leads Six Children To Safety - A seven-year-old boy whose father was killed in a car accident several months ago, lost his life last night when fire swept the second floor of his home on the South Albion Road, in the town of Albion. Harold F. Smith was believed asphyxiated by smoke in the blaze. His mother, Mrs. Mary F. Smith, succeeded in leading her six other children from the burning house, but was driven back by heavy smoke and intense heat when she tried to save her son, a pupil in Altmar elementary school. She was taken to a neighbor's home in a state of shock. The dwelling and its contents were destroyed. Members of the Altmar fire department were called to the scene but the fire had too great a start. The Pulaski fire department sent two trucks through Mutual Aid while Williamstown covered for Altmar. Mrs. Smith told state police that she had been watching television with several of her children, who were downstairs because they had been noisy. Harold was sleeping alone upstairs. About 11:45 p.m. Mrs. Smith heard a crackling sound and detected smoke. She led the children outside and then made a vain attempt to rescue Harold. His body was later found by Altmar firemen on his bed. Investigating from the Pulaski substation were Investigator C. F. Nellis and Troopers R. C. Peck and O. H. Burns. Deputy Sheriff Arthur Fadden was also on the scene. Cause of the fire was not determined. The two-story frame house was located about three-quarters of a mile north of Route 126 (Mapleview-Checkerd House Road). The family lost all its possessions and is in need of clothing and furnishings. Last January 28, Harold's father, Clair Robert Smith, 36, a laborer, and a neighbor, Douglas Sheldon, 44, were killed when the car in which they were riding struck a tree near Dugway, in the town of Altmar. Police said Smith's wife, Mary was driving and the road was slippery. Today Mrs. Sheldon was providing shelter for remaining Smiths. Harold was born March 11, 1961, in the Oswego hospital. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Vickery Smith; four sisters, Linda M., Waneeta M., Lori J. and Sandra O. Smith; two brothers, Ronald and Kevin Smith; his paternal grandfather, Charles Smith of Pulaski; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Vickery, Central Square and several aunts and uncles. Private funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Foster funeral home, Pulaski, with the Rev. Llewellyn Jones, pastor of the Fernwood Baptist church officiating. Burial will be in South Richland cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
