- BIG RAPIDS -- Merie G. Almas, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, at Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital.
She was born Dec. 6, 1929, in Morley, the daughter of Howard and Louis (Wilson) Thurston. Merie married Charles Almas on Aug. 15, 1946, in Howard City, and together they raised their family in Morley.
She was employed by Wolverine World Wide and retired after 45 years. Merie was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Howard City. She had a passion for animals, the outdoors and watching wildlife. Merie liked to go on fishing trips to Canada with Charles. She was an excellent baker, especially apple pies. Merie also enjoyed embroidering.
She will be greatly missed by her family. Merie is survived by her special friend, Sheldon Snyder, of Morley; two children, Susanne Merie (Gary) McIntyre, of Morley, and Steven (Dianna) Almas, of Morley; daughter-in-law, Linda Almas, of Morley; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; eight great-great- grandchildren; sister-in-law, Katie Thurston, of Sand Lake; many nieces and nephews; and her cat, Annie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Almas; son, Randy Almas; an infant grandson, Jeffrey McIntyre; and nine siblings.
Funeral services will take place at noon on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. to noon prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Merie will be laid to rest at Boyd Cemetery in Morley.
Memorial contributions may be made in Merie's name to Mecosta County Animal Rescue Coalition.
