Newspaper Obituary - Wednesday, October 25, 1939 Sandy Creek News - Sandy Creek, New York - Leroy Dunbar Victim of Second Shooting Fatality in 21 Days - Richland Youth Dies Instantly after 22 Caliber Bullet Enters His Head Friday - The victim of the second shooting accident in this section within three weeks, Leroy Dunbar, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Dunbar of Richland, died almost instantly about 8 o'clock Friday morning when a 22 caliber rifle bullet entered his head. The gun was accidentally discharged while held by Gregory Rule, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Rule of that village, the next-door neighbor and pal of the Dunbar boy. Friday being a holiday from their classes, the two boys had started early for a day’s hunting, borrowing a 22 caliber rifle. After taking a few shots at birds without success they decided they needed a little practice so both took a shot at a knot hole in a telephone pole north of the Rule home. Going forward to see whether or not they had hit the target, the Dunbar boy was a little ahead of his companion who carried the gun, which was accidentally fired, the bullet hitting young Dunbar just behind the right ear. Running into the house, Rule told his mother, who sent word to the boy’s father at the Richland gas station. Dr. A. G. Dunbar, Pulaski, an uncle of the victim, was called but life was extinct before he arrived. An investigation of the shooting was conducted by Sergeant Larry A. Fox and Trooper Warren F. Johnson of the Pulaski substation, Assistant District Attorney Clarence J. Gorman, and Deputy Sheriff Herman
F. Pratt of Lacona. Mr. Gorman stated that he would issue a verdict of accidental death, and would not order an inquest. Sergeant Fox appropriated the gun, stating that it was an ancient model and not in good condition. Leroy was born in Richland, the son of Leon G. and Bessie Finster Dunbar. He attended the Richland school where he was a member of the 8th grade class. Surviving besides his parents are two brothers, Harwood and John Dunbar; two sisters, Mrs. Marion Spicer and Miss Ruth Dunbar, all of Richland. A private funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home of his parents on the Ridge road. Rev. Charles T. Martin of the Richland Methodist church, officiated. Burial was at the Orwell cemetery.
