    • Newspaper Obituary - Sandy Creek News April 21, 1932 - Mrs. Avery Otis - Mrs. Elizabeth Otis, 70, wife of Avery Brown Otis of Sandy Creek, died Tuesday morning April 19, 1932, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Stewart, Richland. She had been taken to the Stewart home following an operation in Memorial Hospital, Syracuse, last September. She failed to recover fully from the effects of the operation. Mrs. Otis was born in the town of Ellisburg October 4, 1861, daughter of John H. and Nancy Goodenough Ellis. She was married to Avery Otis, August 25, 1878 and their entire life has been spent in the vicinity of Sandy Creek and Ellisburg with the exception of six years in the west. For many years she and her husband conducted a farm between Sandy Creek and Mannsville. Besides her husband and daughter, Mrs. Stewart, she is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Seward Nutting, Sandy Creek, and four sons, Byron J. of Ellisburg, George H. of Pierrepont Manor, Earl H. of Pulaski and R. Ellis of Ellisburg. She also leaves 24 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Cora Howard of Sandy Creek. Ancestors of Mrs. Ellis were the founders of Ellisburg and the town and village were named in honor of the Ellis family. Private prayer services were held at the Stewart home Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and funeral services in Richland Church of Christ at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Culp of Syracuse officiating. Burial was in Ellisburg.
