- Landon Carter was a very staunch supporter of the Union cause, and was one of the most active in Carter County. He took part in the famous bridge burnings, which severely limited the Confederates ability to transport supplies through the eastern Tennessee area. He was the Captain of the Turkeytown Company, and was a marked man by the local Confederate forces. He eluded capture, escaping to Federal lines where he enlisted in the Union Army. He served in Company B, 4th Tennessee Infantry, during 1862-1864, and later was a Captain in Comapny H, 13th Tennessee Cavalry. Following the war, he returned to Carter County where he served as Constable, 8th Civil District.
